Saltwater Fly Fishing School at Belize River Lodge

Over the years, The Fly Shop®, has built one of the premier Fly Fishing School programs in the country, and starting in 2009 we expanded the program to include a Fly Fishing School devoted entirely to Saltwater Fly Fishing, held at Belize River Lodge.

The emphasis of the school is on fly fishing the flats, focusing on bonefish, permit, tarpon, and snook. Anglers will have opportunities to present flies to all of these different species, with classroom discussions in the evening. Topics include equipment, tackle, flies, and fishing applications for each fish.

A typical day will start with breakfast, and there will be casting instructors on hand to help with casting instruction int he morning before departing from the lodge. Anglers will fish all day, targeting a variety of different species depending on conditions. Guests return from fishing around 5:00 pm, clean up and rendezvous back at the lodge for hors d'oevres and stories from the day. After enjoying a delicious meal, the evening is spent discussing the primary saltwater flats speies, including fly tying demonstrations.

Guests are accommodated in comfortable rooms, and enjoy fabulous meals at the main lodge. All meals are based upon a native Belizean cuisine.
The school is held at the Belize River Lodge, the oldest fishing lodge in Belize. The Belize River Lodge is perfectly located to provide access to a broad variety of different saltwater fly fishing situations, including:

• Shallow bonefish flats
• Medium-depth flats and coral flats for permit
• Deeper flats and channels for big tarpon
• Mangrove lagoons for backcountry snook and baby tarpon

There are some fantastic non-angling eco-tour options as well, including bird-watching, the Belize Zoo, manatee and dolphin viewing, and trips to local Mayan sites.
